Our educational Primary Program is a 3-year preparation to first grade that includes Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten. We welcome 3, 4, 5 and 6-year olds to join this program at any stage. Dr. Montessori discovered that younger children in the classroom learn faster when emulating older children. Conversely, older children retain a better understanding of materials and concepts when they have the opportunity to “teach” younger students. When you observe this program, you’ll see the magic of a mixed community working together.
Children need an interactive, hands-on, educational environment to become self-motivated and successful learners. At this age, they are very engaged and physical learners, so the materials in their environment are built to respond to their physical need to gain educational achievement. The classroom is specifically designed to allow every child to succeed academically, emotionally and socially. Children are free to explore with their senses to fully understand the world around them, receiving the security and consistency that are so important at this stage of their development. As children work to better understand the world of geography, science (botany, zoology) and cultures, they begin to read and write while learning concrete math concepts including the decimal system and geometry. Art and music are also integrated into the curriculum so children can explore any area they wish without leaving their community. Once we see children are progressing toward more abstract concepts and have greater independence and care of the community, we know they are ready to move to the Elementary Program.
