Toddlers Washing Hands!

Although we had a good week in the Butterfly classroom, we've had some illnesses in the classroom.  In the classroom, the materials are sanitized every day and we practice good hygiene such as washing our hands before touching the materials, after going to the bathroom, and before eating snacks or lunch. We always remind children to cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing and wash their hands after. * It is extremely important that you continue with the same practices at home and that you keep your ill child at home until he is well.

Toddler Eating Ideas

Some parents have noticed a change in their toddler’s eating habits, but although it's frustrating for parents, finicky eating is normal behavior for toddlers. Be patient and offer a variety of healthy foods for your picky toddler to choose from. Encourage your toddler to try new foods, but never force a child to eat. Include your child in grocery shopping and food preparation, as finicky eaters will be more likely to try food that they helped prepare. Remember that when it comes to picky toddlers, presentation is everything.

Let Them Do It!

Children in the Butterfly Toddler Class enjoy making beautiful flower arrangements, reading books, and working with puzzles. They are still learning to improve their skill of holding a tray with material and taking it to the table. Even though they sometimes fail, they do not give up and keep trying to carry heavy objects.

What do you do when your child fails a task? Do you do it for them? Do you observe and let them try harder?

Traveling with Toddlers (and up!)

As holiday trips approach, I would like to share some ideas to help keep your child entertained while on the go.  Plane and train travel in particular offer an opportunity for intimacy and family relationship building; something that can be all too rare in our busy lives. Engaging in travel activities creates a context for laughter and learning to share with your child.

    Importance of a Prepared Environment

Dr. Maria Montessori emphasized the importance of a prepared environment for children to thrive and reach their highest potential.  This environment includes clothing, how the child is dressed.  Appropriate clothing is a developmental aid for psycho-sensory-motor development for young children.  At the same time, it can be a big obstacle for your child's development when he/she is dressed without careful consideration.  But it is very simple as putting the following two ideas in mind when helping dress your child.

    Consistency for Healthy Child Development

Maria Montessori always emphasizes consistency in the environment to help child's healthy development.  If your child is working on the toilet learning process, this is very important.  Any change in daily routine can be an obstacle to your child's learning process.  So please be understanding for frequent "misses" when he/she has unusual events such as having visitor(s), going out for a day, and getting involved in exciting activities.  Even a short time change, let's say 30 min longer night sleep, can disrupt your child's routine.
